Common Reasons Active Adults Get Injured
Understanding the underlying mechanisms that precipitate athletic injuries is the primary step in building sustainable resilience.
Sudden Changes in Training
One of the most common problems is doing too much too soon: increasing running mileage rapidly, adding multiple high-intensity workouts, playing several tennis matches in one weekend, suddenly returning to heavy lifting, or beginning a new sport at full intensity.
Your muscles and cardiovascular system may feel capable of handling the activity before your tendons, joints, and other tissues have adequately adapted.
Insufficient Strength
Strength provides the foundation for many physical activities. Weakness in the hips, glutes, core, quadriceps, hamstrings, calves, or shoulders may affect how forces are distributed throughout the body.
A well-designed strength program doesn't necessarily need to be complicated. Consistency is often more important than performing an elaborate routine.
Limited Mobility
Mobility restrictions can affect how you move. For example: limited ankle mobility alters squatting/running; restricted hips strain pelvis/lower back; shoulder stiffness affects overhead reach; and thoracic restrictions impair rotational swings.
Not every mobility limitation causes injury, but identifying meaningful restrictions can be useful when someone has recurring symptoms.
Previous Injuries
A previous injury can sometimes change movement patterns even after pain has resolved. For example, after an ankle sprain, a person may unconsciously favor one side. That compensation may persist during running, jumping, or cutting movements.
Previous injuries should therefore be considered when developing an injury-prevention strategy.
Poor Recovery
Training is only one part of fitness. Recovery allows your body to adapt to exercise. Factors that can affect recovery include: sleep, training frequency, work demands, stress, nutrition, hydration, and overall activity level.
If you're consistently training hard without adequate recovery, your body may struggle to tolerate increasing workloads.
Common Injuries in Active Adults
Understanding where injuries occur helps you focus your preventive conditioning.
Knee Injuries
Common conditions include:
- Patellofemoral pain
- Meniscus injuries
- Patellar tendinopathy

Five Foundations of Injury Prevention
Effective prevention doesn't have to be complicated. I generally encourage active adults to focus on five fundamental areas.
1. Build Strength
Strengthen the muscles required for your activities. For runners, that may include the calves, quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes, and core. For tennis players, shoulder and forearm strength may be particularly important. For golfers, the hips, glutes, core, and upper body all contribute to efficient movement.
2. Maintain Mobility
Mobility work should address the movements your sport requires. This may include: hip mobility, ankle mobility, shoulder mobility, thoracic rotation, and hamstring flexibility. The objective isn't necessarily to become extremely flexible. It's to have sufficient mobility for the activities you perform.
3. Progress Gradually
Your training load should generally increase progressively. Instead of going from no running → 10-mile run, build toward your goal gradually. Similarly, no strength training → maximum-weight lifting is rarely an appropriate progression. Give your body time to adapt.
4. Recover
Rest and recovery are part of training—not a sign that you're doing less. Depending on your activity, recovery may include: rest days, lower-intensity workouts, adequate sleep, mobility work, appropriate nutrition, and hydration.
5. Address Pain Early
One of the most important prevention strategies is not ignoring persistent symptoms. An occasional ache after an unfamiliar workout may resolve with recovery. But pain that: keeps returning, progressively worsens, changes your movement, limits activity, causes swelling, or interferes with sleep deserves attention.
Warm Up Before Exercise
A proper warm-up prepares your body for the activity ahead. Depending on your workout, this may include:
For example, a runner may begin with walking and easy jogging before progressing to faster running. A tennis player might perform light movement and controlled swings before beginning competitive play.
Don't Confuse Soreness With Injury
After a new or intense workout, delayed muscle soreness can occur. However, there is an important difference between generalized muscle soreness and symptoms that may indicate injury. Pay close attention to:
- Sharp or localized pain
- Swelling
- Joint instability
- Significant weakness
- Pain that changes your movement
- Pain that gets worse as you continue exercising
- Persistent symptoms
When in doubt, an evaluation can help distinguish normal post-exercise discomfort from a potentially significant musculoskeletal problem.

Different athletic activities impose unique biomechanical strains that require specific conditioning focus.
Injury Prevention for Runners
Running places repetitive loads on the lower body. Preventive strategies may include:

- Strength training (calves, hips, and glutes)

Runners returning from injury may require an even more structured progression.
Injury Prevention for Tennis & Pickleball Players
Court sports require lateral movement, acceleration, deceleration, rotation, lunging, and repetitive arm movements.
Prevention should therefore include both upper- and lower-body conditioning. Strengthening the shoulders, forearms, hips, glutes, calves, and core can help prepare your body for the demands of these sports.
Injury Prevention for Golfers
Golf requires coordinated movement through the hips, pelvis, thoracic spine, shoulders, elbows, and wrists.
Maintaining mobility and strength throughout this kinetic chain can help you better tolerate repetitive swings. Golfers should also avoid suddenly increasing practice volume, particularly after a long period away from the sport.
Injury Prevention for Strength Training
Strength training is an excellent way to build physical capacity, but technique and progression matter.
- Learn proper movement patterns & don't sacrifice form to lift heavier
- Increase resistance gradually & allow adequate recovery
- Vary your training appropriately & address persistent pain
What About Stretching?
Stretching can be useful for maintaining or improving flexibility, but it isn't a complete injury-prevention strategy on its own.
A comprehensive approach should also include: strength, mobility, balance, coordination, progressive conditioning, and recovery. The best approach depends on your individual needs and activities.
The Role of Physical Therapy
Physical therapy can be an important component of injury prevention, particularly for people with previous injuries, recurrent pain, strength deficits, mobility limitations, or movement dysfunction.
A targeted program can help address specific weaknesses rather than relying on generic exercises.
When a Sports Medicine Evaluation Can Help
Preventive care doesn't always mean waiting until something hurts. An evaluation may be worthwhile if you:
- Have recurring injuries
- Are returning to sports after a long break
- Want to increase training substantially
- Have persistent joint pain
- Have a history of significant sports injuries

- Are starting a new high-intensity activity
